Flow Control vs. Speed Control: Why This Distinction Actually Matters
Most variable speed pool pumps do the same basic thing. You pick a motor speed, the pump holds that speed, and that's the whole story. Turn it down at night, turn it up when the pool's in use, done.

The Problem With Picking a Number and Hoping
A typical variable speed pump doesn't know how much water is moving through your plumbing. It only knows how fast the motor is spinning. Those two things sound like they should track together, but they don't, not reliably.
Pipe diameter, the number of fittings and elbows, filter condition, valve position, even the layout of a specific equipment pad all affect how much flow a given RPM actually produces. Set two identical pumps to the identical speed on two different pool systems and you'll likely get two different flow rates. Neither pump knows this happened. Neither one can respond to it. They were built to hold a speed, not a result.
